Sammanfattning

This study aims to explore how family therapists in social services perceive and describe quality in their work with family support, and how their experience and knowledge contribute to the quality of their practical work. The study was conducted through qualitative, semi-structured interviews with family therapists working within social services. The results reveal that professionals define quality in two ways. One consists of formal aspects, such as evaluations, and one definition with a focus on informal aspects of everyday work. Quality is mostly defined in terms of what quality is for the client. The family therapist describes the alliance with the client as a fundamental key to good-quality family support. The family therapist’s ability to use their discretion was also discussed as a factor that influenced quality. Through discretion, family therapists can use their professional knowledge and adapt the intervention to the client, and thereby create higher quality support given. The family therapist's experience and knowledge contribute to increased individual security in their professional role, which in turn contributes to increased presence and ability to meet the client.
