The purpose of this study is to analyze how the Hillsborough disaster of 1989 was framed in four different British newspapers, in the immediate aftermath and when the Taylor report was published. The study uses the theoretical framework of Robert Entman’s concept media framing. framing, which highlights that media emphasise certain aspects of an event but disregards others. This research uses framing theory to analyze how the Hillsborough disaster was defined by the four newspapers. The theoretical framework provides a structured way to study how the newspapers frame cause, responsibility, moral evaluation and solutions. The empirical material consists of in total eight articles from four different newspapers; Daily Mirror, The Guardian, Liverpool Echo and Nottingham Evening Post. The first four articles are the first publications from each newspaper after the disaster, and the other four are the first publications from when the Taylor report was published. The articles were analyzed with a focus on recurring themes: law enforcement, supporters, the stadium, national trauma and grief. The findings show that the most recurring frames are focusing on police failure as the primary cause of the disaster, while supporters were exonerated from blame. Especially so after the publishing of the Taylor report.
