Generativ AI : En kartläggning av universitetslärare användning och inställning

Digitalization is advancing rapidly, and the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasing across various industries. The purpose of this study has been to investigate teachers’ usage, attitudes and challenges with GenAI in higher education. A qualitative approach was applied, where six semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers from a Swedish University. The theoretical framework Unified theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) was applied in the study to analyze and understand the use of GenAI within the teaching profession.The result of the study presents five identified themes: Attitudes towards GenAI, Challenges and risks associated with GenAI, the need for support, guidelines and education, organizational conditions, and the use of GenAI. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of how teachers in higher education in Sweden utilize GenAI in their work and highlights teachers’ their attitudes and challenges related to the technology.The study shows that the use of GenAI among university teachers at the university is limited, despite a cautiously positive attitude. The most common use cases for GenAI include article summarization, email structuring, quiz generation, example creation and translation. The results indicate that the tools are used sporadically and the usage remains highly individual. This highlights the need for training and support to enable effective and systematic use of the technology. The attitude toward GenAI is characterized by an awareness of its potential, but also by concerns related to academic integrity, student cheating, hallucinations and ethical issues. In particular, the lack of tools to identify AI-generated material is emphasized as a major challenge for teachers and universities. The findings underscore the importance of developing clear, organization-wide guidelines to support both teachers’ own use of GenAI and the management of student use.
