Sammanfattning

Background: In dementia disease, a person-centred approach is required to ensure good care. Knowledge is limited regarding how assistant nurses in home care experience this, as well as the significance of the specialist nurse’s supervisory function in relation to it. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe how assistant nurses in home care experience good care for people with dementia and to shed light on their experiences of the nurse's supervision. Method: A qualitative interview study was conducted with assistant nurses in home care service who work with people with dementia. The interviews were transcripted and analyzed in accordance with Graneheim and Lundman (2004). Results:The study shows that good care for people with dementia is based on safety, relationships, and participation, which requires knowledge, time, and continuous supervision. The findings also highlight how organizational factors, such as lack of time and limited opportunities for reflection, may affect the quality of care and the specialist nurse’s supervisory role. Conclusion: The results indicate that high-quality care presupposes person-centredness and a sense of safety. At the same time, deficiencies in competence and support become evident. A need for supervision is highlighted to enable professional development and enhance the sense of security.
