In Nynäshamn's northernmost tip is the Rappsta business area. This is where Nynäsvägen, which starts in Stockholm and connects several of the municipality's locations, first meets the city. Here, around fifty entrepreneurs run businesses ranging from carpentry and glassworks to hardware stores and film studios. After a number of site visits and interviews with professionals in the area, it became clear that the place lacks open spaces where people can meet across businesses for both associational life and socializing. With this in mind, I started the work of creating such a place, where you can meet for everything from formal meetings to workshops or courses in the public workshops. The area is also facing a change, heavy industry is to be relocated and housing is to be built. The purpose of the project is to respond to the needs that exist on the site today and at the same time prepare it for future changes. Meeting rooms in different sizes and designs facilitate collaboration and association life of various kinds for the professionals in the area as well as the new residents. The bakery acts as a lunchtime sandwich bar and responds to the lack of lunch restaurants in the area. The workshops are also intended to benefit the residents and make space-consuming crafts accessible even for those with small living spaces. Here people who for various reasons, who might otherwise never have happened, are in the area can meet. The design alludes to the building typology and materiality that characterizes the area. The building's low, extended body and corrugated metal roofs emerge from the site's dominating building typology; the tin shed. The primary structure is built up of clay blocks that are clad on the outside with facade bricks similar to the buildings that were built in the area's emergence in the 70s. Inside the building, materials such as wood wool, plywood and pine moldings create softness and a more earthy atmosphere. The brick chimney, which connects the kilns of the pottery workshop and the bakery, towers over the roof ridge, draws eyes and creates a visual identity for the House for craftship.
