Vehicle ramming attacks are a growing global security concern, highlighting the need for protective measures that combine safety and aesthetics. This study investigates the potential of using C3Cblock®, a modular concrete block developed by C3C Engineering AB, as a vehicle barrier at the southern entrance of the hospital in Räppe, Växjö, Sweden. The aim was to evaluate whether these blocks can offer an effective protection while the blocks maintain a welcoming an aesthetically pleasing environment. Standard blocks (800x800x1600) were used to create different configurations, that were created in Revit and assessed according to three defined threat levels. The results show that integrating elements like plants, lighting and seating into the design can reduce the harsh appearance of concrete, creating a safer space without causing fear or discomfort. The study concludes that it’s possible to create a configuration that achieves both security and visual harmony. However further studies are recommended for other areas of the hospital and for exploring additional design improvements.
