Sammanfattning

The aim of study was to examine how young adults aged 20-33 with migrant backgrounds experience integration and sense of belonging in Sweden, focusing on similarities and differences between first- and second-generation immigrants. The study was conducted using a qualitative method based on semi-structured interviews with eight participants. The collected material was analysed through thematic analysis. The results identified four central themes: in-betweenness and conditional belonging, the role of language in integration and participation, adaptation and social navigation, and discrimination and structural barriers. The findings indicate that experiences of integration and belonging are shaped by language, social relationships, norm discriminations and social acceptance. Participants from the first-generation mainly described challenges related to adaptation and language, while second-generation participants more often described experiences of questioned belonging despite being born and raised in Sweden. The study indicates that integration is not solely an individual responsibility but also influenced by societal recognition, acceptance and inclusion. The findings contribute to increased understanding of integration and belonging among young adults with migrant backgrounds.
