This thesis presents the design and implementation of a prototype of an interactive, modular game board with sensor-based piece recognition and real-time visual feedback. The research addresses the challenge of creating adaptable board game systems that can support multiple game formats through embedded mechanisms.Using the Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM), the study develops a comprehensive solution that combines Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, multiplexed sensor arrays, and a graphical user interface to monitor and react to physical game piece movements. The prototype employs PN532 RFID reader modules connected via I2C multiplexers to an Arduino Mega ADK microcontroller, enabling scalable detection of game pieces on the board. A simplified version of chess is used as the demonstration, highlighting the system’s capability to recognize moves, validate moves according to the game rules, and provide immediate feedback through embedded LED indicators and digital interface. The results demonstrate implementation of a modular architecture that separates game logic from hardware components, allowing for adaptability across different game formats. While the current prototype is restricted to a 4x4 grid size, this research opens up the possibility of larger implementations and offers and identifies pathways for enhancing sensor resolution, embedded feedback mechanisms, and user testing in future iterations. This research also contributes to the area of interactive gaming systems by providing a flexible framework that can be used in future implementations of different board games
