Sammanfattning

The following thesis revolves around Reiner Schürmann’s question of what is to be done in the age of the closure of metaphysics, when thinking no longer offers a foundation for acting. Instead of proposing an answer to this question the following thesis aims to understand who this subject is and how we should understand action in this closure when the subject no longer can be thought of in terms of subiectum or hypokeimenon and when action appears without any governing principle. In order to approach this problem of subjectivity and action in Schürmann, the following study argues that we turn to Schürmann’s early readings of Meister Eckhart and his speculative mysticism. Throughout his works, Schürmann develops on what it means to live without a why, releasement and anarchy, but in his early writings on Meister Eckhart we find a more radical understanding of releasement as a movement between detachment [Abgeschiedenheit] and releasement [Gelassenheit] in which the subject voluntarily detaches himself in order to let God act through him in a wandering identity. The aim of this approach is thus to analyze the existential dimension that we find in Schürmann’s writings on Eckhart by using his concept of releasement in relation to subjectivity and action. A central thesis of the essay, which I will seek to demonstrate, is how we can understand releasement as the very happening of anarchy, its event. By this, I also show that it is through releasement that anarchy takes shape in terms of subjectivity and action. This enables us to understand what it means to constitute oneself and act as an anarchic subject in terms of errancy and abandonment.
