Sammanfattning

In 2021, the construction and management phase of buildings accounted for nearly 22% of Sweden's total greenhouse gas emissions. Since 2006, there has been a law requiring that whoever constructs a building is also responsible for declaring the energy use of the building. The purpose of the law is to promote efficient energy use in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Sweden's electricity and energy production only account for 8% of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, one may question whether reducing energy consumption is the right approach to mitigate the climate impact of the construction and management sector. The study examines how the climate impact differs between two buildings with different yearly energy use. This is done by taking in to account the climate impact of the additional materials that is required to reduce the energy use. Furthermore, the climate impact due to the difference in heating energy over a 50-year period resulting from the two different buildings is also considered. The conclusion of the study is that based on how and where the energy is produced it can be beneficial, in a climate impact perspective, to construct the building for a lower energy use. However, in Värnamo where the study is completed it would not be beneficial for the examined building.
