On February 4th, 2025, the mass shooting at Campus Risbergska skolan in Örebro made national and international headlines. This study examines how traditional (Aftonbladet), alternative (Fria Tider) and social media (Reddit) covered the shooting during its initial week. The aim was to compare the three media types and assess how each medium adhered to established recommendations for covering mass shootings. The study employs an analytical framework based on three ideal types of media logic: news, opinion, and platform logic. The results reveal a clear distinction between the three media types. Aftonbladet followed a traditional news logic emphasizing professional journalism with separation between fact and opinion, although elements of sensationalism reflecting commercial logic were also present. Fria Tider followed an opinion logic with a less distinct boundary between fact and opinion with content that was often critical of authorities and established media. Reddit followed a platform logic that was characterized by fragmented and frequently polarized user-generated content with instances of conspiracy theories and misinformation. Finally, none of the three media types adhered to the established recommendations for covering mass shootings, particularly regarding the avoidance of sensationalism and giving minimal attention to the perpetrator.
