This thesis examines how archival silences concerning women’s history can be challenged through feminist standpoints to traditional archival practice. The study uses the Swedish initiatives Arkivism (2021) and “hyllmeter åt kvinnorna” (shelf meters for women) as a case study to examine factors of archival neutrality, collection, and resistance through the lens of how to challenge and move power. Both projects emerged from a recognition that women’s experience and contribution systematically have been left out of historical research and archival collections. The thesis argues that feminist standpoint in archival practices should not only be understood as an attempt to create balance in the archives, but rather as interventions that brings a light to archival power and makes archival practises open to critical reflection. By focusing on women’s history and communal involvement, the projects contribute to new understandings of how to create cultural memories, and the archivist’s role in shaping history for the future.
