Background Mastectomy is a surgical procedure that may be medically necessary, which can have significant consequences for a woman´s life situation and may lead to a need for various nursing care interventions. The procedure can also lead to both psychological and physical challenges and affect a woman´s quality of life. Aim The aim of the literature review is to highlight women´s experiences after mastectomy. Method The literature review was conducted based on twelve qualitative studies. The articles were identified through searches in the databases PubMed and CINAHL and analyzed using a structured analysis process. Results The altered body image affected the women´s self-esteem, femininity, and sexual health. The need for person-centered care, rehabilitation, information, and a respectful approach was perceived as significant. Women developed various strategies to cope with their return to everyday life where social support was a crucial factor. Conclusions Women who have undergone mastectomy have a significant need for support, information and person-centered care in order to manage the physical, psychological and social consequences of the procedure.
