Adults with a history of substance abuse constitute a marginalized group whose experiences of contact with social services are rarely highlighted in research. This study aimed to explore how clients with prior substance abuse problems experience the treatment they received within the social services’ unit for financial assistance and housing, and how such treatment influences their openness to receiving support. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with adults who have had contact with social services during the past five years and who have a history of substance abuse. The results show that professional treatment plays an important role in shaping clients’ experiences of social services and their willingness to engage in the support process. Relational factors such as trust, respect, clear communication, continuity, and feeling seen and heard were identified as particularly significant. Initial encounters were often characterized by power imbalances and preconceived expectations rooted in experiences of stigma and marginalization, which are identified as factors affecting clients’ trust in social services. The study concludes that a more individualized, relational, and recognition-based approach is necessary to enhance client openness and improve social service practice, alongside organizational conditions that support continuity and professional development.
