Sammanfattning

The Earth's temperature is rising, and we are seeing the consequences of climate change. The automotive industry is a significant driver of CO2 emissions continuing at the same unsustainable rate and is therefore an important player in the effort to reduce emissions. One approach for companies to get a holistic view of the environmental risks they contribute to and demonstrate responsibility is through sustainability reporting. In connection with sustainability reporting, they can demonstrate transparency regarding their impact on the environment and what strategies they have for addressing the problems. To get a structure and ensure that all environmental areas are included, a tool such as the GRI standard can be a good method. The study analyzed three automotive companies that show how environmental risks are identified and reported, which requirements in the GRI standard they achieve, and measures. The study is a qualitative multi-case study with a document analysis where a thematic and comparative analysis has been carried out. To present the theoretical background, a literature review has been conducted. The data collection from the document analysis is based on the companies' sustainability reports and a framework has been developed to assess whether the requirements of the GRI standard are met. Based on the framework, similarities and differences between the companies have also been discovered. Some similarities are avoiding the use of primary materials and using renewable energy and differences, that Volvo wants to transition to low/near zero emissions of materials. Mercedes has concrete measures for biodiversity and Mazda wants to develop the next generation of biofuel. The study has shown both strengths and weaknesses in sustainability reporting. The strengths are that companies get a holistic view of their impact and that they can then implement measures that can reduce the negative impact on the environment. They also demonstrate social responsibility and transparency for their stakeholders. The weaknesses discovered are that sustainability reporting is used as a marketing tool, that they only pick the good results and that there is often a lack of evidence of the connection between the negative impact and how this is managed. The study also addresses how companies are addressing a transition to an electrified vehicle fleet based on the law that the EU will introduce in 2035. It is clear that they understand that their operations contribute to many of the environmental problems we have now and that we will face in the future
