This study aimed to examine how professionals within the probation services in Sweden work with recidivism prevention, and their personal descriptions of the important components within the work. The study also aimed to determine if there are any differences in the recidivism prevention about the client's gender. The approach has been carried out through a qualitative study. The qualitative study was based on six semi-structured interviews with seven employees of the Swedish probation service. The participants in the study were chosen through a strategic sampling method to guarantee that they met the requirements of experience relevant to the purpose of the study. The results of the study show that the relationship with the client is crucial in the recidivism prevention work. It also presents a picture of the struggles of probation services work, which shows that cooperation between authorities often can be difficult. In regard to gender, the results show that differences between male and female clients vary. The perception of differences between genders also differs in the interviews, where some describe it as fairly equal, while others can identify big differences between men and women. The concluding result in this regard is that the described gender differences mostly occur in the individual meeting with the client and professional, rather than in the framework of the Swedish probation service. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how recidivism prevention is carried out in the Swedish probation service, and how gender can play a part in this work. The study emphasises that further research in this area is needed to determine a more nuanced picture.
