Modernt eller modernistiskt? En studie kring inverkan av planeringsideal på Malmös grönytor i relation till bostadsområden

This paper strives to compare the compact city model against modernist planning in relation to urban green spaces. When comparing two ideals that value green spaces, (i) is it possible to find differences within the green space’s quality between modernist planning and contemporary compact city planning, in correlation to human well-being? Furthermore, (ii) how can these differences further our understanding of the compact city’s effect on quality green spaces? Previous research primarily focused on these ideals separately and concluded that the effects on green spaces are polarized. The theoretical groundwork of this paper is that of the compact city and how its ideas shape contemporary planning. Greenspace quality is theoretically based upon a framework. A comparative study is conducted using document analysis and semi-structured observations within two residential areas in Malmö. The results showed that compact planning in comparison to modernist ideas creates smaller and fewer greenspaces, leading to inhabitants being partly-dependent on recreational activities within larger green areas outside the planned area. This essay showcases a connection between the pursuit of compact planning and the increased strain on already existing green spaces. This furthers the understanding of how compact planning affects urban green spaces, and contradicting aspects between ideals and practice surrounding the value of green spaces.
