NÄR RELIGION BLIR POLITIK : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av Sverigedemokraternas inramning av religion

This study investigates the Sweden Democrats’ framing of religion across the political areas of crime, gender equality and integration through a qualitative content analysis between 2018-2025. The aim is to examine variation between these political areas and the function of the framing of religion within each political area. The empirical material consists of election manifests, election platforms, principal program and parliamentary motions from the Sweden Democrats. The empirical material is analysed through Entman’s (1993) framing theory and analysis functions constructed through previous research. The findings are that the Sweden Democrats consistently frame religion as a societal problem, although this framing varies across political areas. Religion is constructed as an obstacle to gender equality, a risk factor linked to crime and radicalisation, and a source of social fragmentation in relation to integration. At the same time, religion serves different functions in the party’s political rhetoric, primarily being used to legitimise proposals, construct boundaries between groups, and define national identity.
