History has neglected the importance of logistics in relation to winning battles or wars. In this thesis, the concept of multimodal transportation is viewed from av historical view. The landing in Normandie 1944 during World War Two is a case of how all four transportation methods are used to sustain continued logistics which has not been researched before. The four are railways, supply by air, supply by sea, and motor transport. This thesis seeks to broaden the understanding of the case and contribute to the understanding of how we can use the transportation methods together to have continuity in sustainment. To do this, document analysis has been used to contain material for this case study, and Finkel's flexibility theory is used to analyze the case. The question this thesis seeks to answer is how did the American forces (within the allied forces) work with multimodal transportation during the landing in Normandie 1944? The results tell us that planning is important for logistics but it´s crucial to have flexibility and be able to change original habits to succeed in continuous sustainment. Furthermore, does the result show that effectiveness and usage of all different transportation methods during this case contributed greatly to the problem of sustainment.
