Sammanfattning

Livestock farming in Norrbotten has been a dominant industry due to a significant portion of grasslands. Dairy and beef production have played a crucial role in food supply and shaping the landscape and history. The majority of farms in Norrbotten can be classified as smallholdings, and grass cultivation is substantial. A decreased number of cattle has changed the agriculture and production methods. This modern development has affected the agriculture in Sweden. Among the agricultural companies in Norrbotten with cattle there are relatively many dairy producers and fewer specializing in beef production compared to the rest of the country. Operating an agricultural business with cattle in Norrbotten occurs under specific conditions due to the unique climate. The purpose of the study is to provide insight into the beef production in the county, and to identify challenges and opportunities that beef producers face. The results of this study suggest that the majority of farmers perceive economics and support systems as challenges to developing and operating a profitable beef production. There are good conditions regarding forage for fodder and pasture for beef production. Accessing these lands can sometimes be a challenge. Farmers feel that politics and policies do not take local conditions into account despite targeted agricultural compensations being available. A potential future increase in demand for locally produced food is an opportunity. At the same time there is a challenge in that different interests and perspectives regarding beef production collide. The cattle are supposed to contribute to increasing biodiversity and keeping landscapes open while also being considered a contributing factor to climate change. It can be difficult to meet all the demands from society, consumers and authorities.
