Background: Heart failure is a complex disease that affects the individual’s physical capacity and can affect psychological, emotional, and cognitive processes. The condition requires patients to be compliant with prescribed and recommended treatment. A high level of compliance indicates a reduced risk of recurrent hospitalizations and death. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe patient’s experiences of following treatment in heart failure. Method: The method used was a general literature review. A total of 11 articles were selected and reviewed, processed, and analyzed. The articles were selected from two different databases. Results: Four main categories were formed: The importance of knowledge for adherence, Care relationship and accessibility to healthcare, Family and loved ones as a driving force for adherence, and Own attitude and motivation as a factor for adherence. Under the main category Own attitude and motivation as a factor for adherence, the subcategory of Individual strategies was formed. Conclusion: Patients experience many different factors that contribute to how compliant they are with the prescribed and recommended treatment. Factors that were described as important for patients' adherence to treatment were knowledge, support from family, loved ones, and support from healthcare professionals and motivation. Patients also expressed that access to healthcare was perceived to facilitate their ability to adhere to treatment.
