Perceptual qualities of pre-delay times on artificially reverberated drums in metal music

Abstract Pre-delay is a tool that can change how artificial reverberation is perceived. However, the research on the topic is sparse and no previous investigation has been conducted specifically on the perception of pre-delay times for artificially reverberated drums in the context of metal music. This study investigated whether pre-delay times can help achieve clarity and/or punch by conducting a modified MUSHRA-style listening test on audio engineering students. The investigation found no statistical significance on the use of pre-delay in terms of achieving clarity. However, it was found for achieving punch. The analysis did not identify which part of the data was statistically significant. Further research is recommended to gain a better understanding of the perception of pre-delay for artificial reverberation.
