Sammanfattning

Background With an ageing population, the need for hip surgery is increasing. This leads to higher healthcare costs, particularly related to postoperative pain. To support recovery in older patients (≥65 years), it is important to understand their experiences of postoperative pain and pain relief. Aim The aim was to describe older patients’ experiences of postoperative pain and pain relief after hip surgery, during hospital care and after discharge Method This literature review was conducted as a structured literature review and included 16 scientific articles published between 2016 and 2026. The articles had both qualitative and quantitative designs. The participants were older patients (≥65 years). Results Postoperative pain affected recovery and daily life. Many patients experienced difficulties with mobilization and participation in rehabilitation. Pain also affected psychological well-being and contributed to fear and insecurity. It was common for patients to became more dependent on others. Support, clear information, and effective communication contributed to increased feelings of safety and improved pain relief. Conclusions Postoperative pain affects recovery after hip surgery. Pain, emotional reactions and reduced independence can delay recovery, while support, clear communication, and patient involvement and individualized pain relief can facilitate it.
