Background Cancer-related pain is a significant source of suffering for hospitalized cancer patients and is often complex and multidimensional. Nurses have a key role in assessing, managing and evaluating pain. Aim The aim is to compile nurses’ experiences of pain management in hospitalized cancer patients. Method A structured literature review with elements of a systematic approach was conducted. 15 qualitative research articles were included and analyzed using a thematic analysis method, through which the authors identified similarities and differences. Categories were subsequently developed based on meaning units. Results Nurses report both positive and negative experiences of pain management in cancer-related pain, influenced by factors such as pharmacological treatment, organizational conditions, pain assessment methods, professional experience and patients’ different perceptions of their illness and treatment. Conclusions Nurses’ experiences of pain management in cancer-related pain indicate a need for improved education and organizational conditions.
