Sammanfattning

This thesis investigates how Portal 2 (Valve Corporation, 2011) uses its puzzle mechanics as vehicles for narrative delivery. A three-category analytical framework — Environmental Storytelling, Mechanic-Embedded Narrative, and Interruptive Narrative — is applied to four case studies drawn from different chapters of the game, supplemented by an examination of how narrative pacing and puzzle pacing coordinate within each level. Findings indicate that narrative delivery in Portal 2 is systematically coordinated with puzzle activity: dialogue ceases during mechanically demanding segments, narrative density clusters around moments of mechanical novelty rather than difficulty, and AI characters use facility mechanics as instruments of narrative expression. The pacing relationship varies across the game, from bookend structures in early chapters to inverted patterns in later chapters where narrative carries the interest while puzzles are simplified. These findings move beyond existing thematic analyses of the Portal series to identify specific design mechanisms through which puzzle mechanics carry narrative weight, contributing to game design knowledge about narrative-mechanic integration in puzzle games.
