Sammanfattning

This thesis examines three European international news broadcasts: BBC, DW News, and France24 to analyse how discourses of responsibility are constructed in their video news coverage of the 2023 Pylos shipwreck. Entman's (1993) four framing functions is applied as the primary analytical framework, which is complemented by Rodriguez and Dimitrova's (2011) visual framing framework and Fairclough's (1995) critical discourse analysis (CDA). Fourteen videos published within ten days of the incident were analysed. Findings reveal notable differences across the three outlets. BBC and DW news both demonstrate more challenging of the official Greek Coast Guard narrative, in which humanitarian voices and structural causes are the most notable characteristics. France 24 more frequently reproduces state-aligned discourse. All three outlets predominantly mediate migrant experiences through the use of sources rather than direct survivor testimony. These findings contribute to the broader field of media and migration studies by demonstrating how international news broadcasts frame accountability following large-scale migration tragedies.
