Sammanfattning

Impulsivity is a complex and important factor in the study of personality traits and understanding risk-taking behaviors. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between trait impulsivity and propensity for risk-taking. We utilized a quantitative method employing two questionnaires to measure impulsivity and competitiveness, alongside a version of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), designed for assessing decision-making in risk-reward scenarios. Including competitiveness as a variable in the study allowed for controlling potential influencing factors on the results. The sample comprised 20 students from Lund University, consisting of 15 women and 5 men. Results revealed no statistically significant correlation between impulsivity and risk propensity among the participants. While participants’ inclination towards advantageous cards increased throughout the IGT, there remained no statistically significant correlation between performance and levels of impulsivity. Previous studies exploring the relationship between impulsivity and risk propensity have presented different findings, underscoring the necessity of accounting for various aspects of risk-taking and impulsivity. Constraints in sampling and methodology, as well as the complexity of risk-taking behavior, emphasized the need for further research to understand the underlying mechanisms governing decision-making and risk-taking in situations involving risk.
