Sammanfattning

Background Diabetes is a common chronic disease that may lead to serious complications, including foot ulcers in people with diabetes. These ulcers can cause infections, prolonged treatment, and in severe cases, amputation or death. Nurses play an important role in prevention through early identification of at-risk patients, regular foot assessments, and patient education regarding self-care. Aim The aim of this study was to describe nurses' work in preventive measures for foot ulcers in people with diabetes. Method The study was conducted as a literature review based on articles from the CINAHL and PubMed databases. The articles were analyzed and compiled according to common themes. Results The results show that nurses’ preventive work differs across healthcare settings and is influenced by both individual and organizational factors. Educational interventions improve knowledge and clinical competence, while regular foot assessments and patient education are key preventive strategies. However, time constraints, high workload, and limited resources are major barriers to the effective implementation of preventive care. Conclusions Nurses have a central role in the prevention of foot ulcers in people with diabetes. Increased education, improved working conditions, and interprofessional collaboration may contribute to better care and a reduced risk of complications.
