Sammanfattning

Background The elderly population is increasing in Sweden, among other places, and this should mean that the number of people with dementia is increasing in Sweden. Therefore, resources need to be invested in training healthcare personnel to be able to cope with future challenges in nursing, increase the quality of care and healthcare, and work cost-effectively. Aim Describing nurses' experiences of working with person-centered care for people with dementia in residential care Method This study has been conducted as a literature review using scientific articles. The content is based on fourteen articles from the CINAHL and Pubmed databases. Results Two categories were identified with three subcategories for each category. The category Person-centered care describes how person-centered care is perceived by nurses and how it works in practice. The main category Prerequisites for person-centered care describes how nurses perceive the education, care environment and their understandings and experiences. Conclusions Person-centered care has a central role in the care of people with dementia, to see the individual behind the disease. The nurse needs to adapt the treatment, communication and measures based on the person's cognitive ability, life history and individual needs, while making the person involved and independent. To make this possible, training, staffing, sufficient time and support from colleagues are required.
