Sammanfattning

Background: Sleep is vital for recovery and overall well-being. Individuals in intensive care units often face sleep interruptions due to factors within the environment, medical procedure, discomfort, anxiety, and severe health conditions. Lack of sleep among ICU patients can lead to negative consequences such as extended hospital stays. Nurses are key in enhancing sleep through tailored nursing techniques. Aim: To describe nurses’ experiences of patients sleep problems in the intensive care units. Method: A qualitative approach was performed. Relevant databases were systematically searched for academic articles, which were subsequently examined using qualitative content analysis. Results: The outcomes reveal that nurses encounter both chances and obstacles when facilitating patients sleep. Factors in the environment, organizational frameworks, and medical urgency regularly restricted efforts to promote sleep. Concurrently, nurses emphasized the necessity for personalized care, collaboration, and clinical discretion while managing patient safety and the need for rest. Conclusion: Nurses have a key role in sleep within ICU environments, yet structural and environmental obstacles can impede effective patient sleep. Enhancing awareness, providing structured guidelines, and ensuring organizational backing could improve nursing care that supports sleep in intensive care units.
