Sammanfattning

This paper addresses turn-taking and turn-allocation as multimodal practices in mediated political party leader debates. Using a conversation analytical approach, the empirically collected data has been transcribed with consideration to both verbal and embodied resources for deploying either a turn-allocation or a turn-taking strategy. A special focus has also been given to analysing the ways in which interactional asymmetry is manifested in political debates. Furthermore, two main categories have been identified for analysing turn-taking and turn-allocation: "current-selects-next"-techniques and self-selection. These categories consequently make out the basis for the analytical portion of this paper. The results will show that the former one is most prominently displayed in the turn-allocating activity. The paper will present two different allocation-techniques that are frequently used by the mediators. The latter one is deployed in different forms of self-initiated turn-taking practices by the politicians themselves. The results will also show how the participants orient towards raising their hand as a social norm to obtain permission to respond to another politician’s utterance.
