This study examines gender representation in mediated conversations about Swedish men’s football between male and female sportscasters. Through an Applied Critical Analysis of both live- and studio commentary this research analyzes the power balance between men and women and which conversation strategies the sportscasters use to negotiate for power. The theoretical framework is based on Stuart Hall's Representation theory, Gaye Tuchman's theory about symbolic annihilation, the theory of Discourse Analysis and Yvonne Hirdman’s Gender System. The results show that female sportcasters need to conform to male ideals and norms to consolidate their professional identity as sportscasters. The commentary of men’s fotball in Sweden is male dominated and driven by ideals that suppress women and reproduce patriarchal structures. This study emphasizes the importance of highlighting gender structures and analysing its gendered discourses.
