Stabil bostad - vägen till nykterhet? En kvantitativ studie utifrån socialarbetares uppfattningar om Bostad Först och beroendeproblematik.

This study aimed to examine the potential impact of the Housing First model on residents’ substance use and addiction. This was conducted by collecting data on social workers' perceptions of the work related to Housing First and interventions regarding substance use and addiction. The study applied a quantitative approach and was conducted using a web-based survey to address the research questions. A targeted strategic non-probability sample was used, including 103 municipalities and city districts that work with Housing First. The respondents consisted of social workers, without any profession-specific restrictions, working within social housing or substance use services. Data collection was preceded by extensive outreach to municipalities. To generate additional data, the survey was posted in a Facebook group for social workers. In total, 89 social workers completed our web survey, representing 33 different municipalities across Sweden. Our analysis was based on the Theory of Recovery Capital and Resource Dependence Theory to explain and discuss our findings. Based on our findings, we conclude that more resources are needed in order to enable cooperation within and between human service organizations and to adapt the work to the participants' individual needs. This may have a positive impact on participants’ motivation for treatment and on the treatment process itself. For some previously homeless individuals with substance use disorders and addiction, the housing stability provided by Housing First supports a future life of sobriety.
