Sammanfattning

The sector containing construction and real estate are a big part of the total greenhouse gas emissions in Sweden. They drastically need to be lowered to reach the climate goals provided by the European Commission and the Swedish parlamanet. A significant part of the emissions of buildings is caused by the frame system of buildings, and to counter the high emissions, glulam as a material in the frame system has started to be compared and implemented as a substitute. The aim for this study is to examine the climate impact for a steel frame system in a warehouse, and compare it to a glued laminated timber (Glulam) frame system, and to see if the foundation construction affect the comparison of the climate impact. This was done by calculating acceptable dimensions for parts of the glulam frame to obtain a total weight, which then was compared to the total weight for the existing steel frame. The total weight for both of the frames are part of the calculation for the climate impact by doing a life cycle analysis in the product stage (A1-A3). The climate impact of the foundation slabs is also considered by calculating the dimensions. The results favoured the glulam frame system by having a climate impact about 300% less than the existing steel frame system, even if the glulam frame system had a total weight of about 50% more than the steel frame. This result have the founation slabs in mind. The foundation slabs for both frame systems were calculated and resulted in a equal size.
