Sammanfattning

The purpose of the analysis was to use Panofsky's method and Baxandall's theories to seek answers to the question of how and why three artists in the late 18th century painted motifs with mines. Baxandall's context-based theories led to the result that the artists, in their own ways, painted what customers were happy to buy, namely sublime mining environments, either interior or exterior with chiaroscuro elements, bright and deep perspectives, technical details and concentrated miners toil in the elements of weather and nature. The growing and more economically prosperous bourgeoisie was happy to buy the sublime mining motifs because their own business were probably involved in the process of the ore being transformed into iron and then exported. Customers sometimes even wanted themselves to be included in the motif.
