This study analyzez the iconography of the chalice in Irsta church through an iconological approach. The aim is to reassess previous interpretations an to examine how the imagery relates to the chalice´s liturgical function. The results show that the depicted figures do not form a narrative representation, but instead constitute a coherent theological program. The figures function as typological representationes that emphasize Christ´s lineage and the fulfillment of prophecy. The central role of the Virgin Mary contributes to linking the imagery to the Eucharist through her function as the Mother of Christ. The imagery thus appears as an expression of a deliberate theological and liturgical logic. The study also demonstrates that earlier interpretations lack a coherent iconological analysis, and that certain established interpretations of the chalice´s imagery need to be reconsidered.
