Sweden: An immigrant’s utopia, or is it? : Understanding the Perceptions of Feasibility and Desirability among Potential Immigrant Entrepreneurs in Sweden

This thesis explores the feasibility and desirability of starting a new business among immigrant students in Sweden, focusing on their unique experiences, motivations, and challenges. Drawing from six qualitative interviews, the study applies theoretical frameworks such as the Theory of Planned Behaviour to analyse the factors influencing entrepreneurial aspirations. The findings reveal that feasibility is shaped by access to resources, self-efficacy, and systemic barriers, while desirability is driven by intrinsic motivations, cultural influences, and socio-economic aspirations. The study highlights significant barriers, including language obstacles, scattered resources, and limited institutional support tailored to immigrant needs. Despite these challenges, participants expressed strong entrepreneurial aspirations rooted in their desire for autonomy, creativity, and socio-economic mobility. Practical recommendations include enhancing policy frameworks, improving access to resources, and fostering community support systems to bridge the gap between aspirations and actualisation. The research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on immigrant entrepreneurship by providing nuanced insights into the intersection of feasibility and desirability. It underscores the importance of tailored interventions and collaborative support structures in empowering immigrant entrepreneurs and fostering inclusive economic growth. Future research directions include longitudinal studies and the exploration of digital tools in supporting immigrant entrepreneurship.
