The use of AI when analysing financial statements : A quantitative study exploring if investors utilize Artificial Intelligence when analysing financial information

AI is a recently introduced topic from a research perspective, creating opportunities to explore it within different fields and areas. The implications of AI are many, and it has fundamentally changed the business environment and how we as humans operate in a professional setting. Several areas within the business field have started to utilize AI, and its implementation is growing. The aim of this study is to comprehend if AI is being utilized for analysing financial statements, specifically by investors. The study is founded upon literature that covers how accounting data is being processed, presented, and especially how it is being analysed and interpreted. To unravel what factors are influencing the usage of AI for said purposes, a logistic regression was carried out. To make sure that it can be used for predictive purposes, a confusion matrix was applied. The findings from the collected data indicates that there is a low usage of AI by investors when analysing financial statements. From the statistical testing that have been conducted, it was established that within our population there where mainly three variables that influence the usage of AI for analysing financial statements. The variables of significance are comprised of the age variable, the time variable, as well as the reliability variable. Another interesting finding is that the perception of the respondents in regard to how complex financial statements are to analyse, indicated that the majority are comfortable in their ability to make that analysis on their own. The findings from this study represents a lot of new insights in relation to previous studies within the financial & accounting field.
