This study examines deviations from standard Finnish in written texts produced by beginner-level university students born in Sweden with Swedish as their first language. The primary aim is to identify and categorize types of deviations, and the secondary aim is to investigate whether structural differences between Finnish and Swedish can help explain them. The study is based on a contrastive error analysis of texts from the International Corpus of Learner Finnish (ICLFI), comprising 64,214 words. The results reveal recurring deviations at phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical-semantic levels, including errors in vowel harmony, case usage, possessive suffixes, congruence, necessive constructions, adpositions and direct translations from Swedish. The analysis indicates that the students' native language influences their written Finnish, and that interference from Swedish is an explanatory factor for many of the observed deviations.
