Sammanfattning

Compulsory care of children is a central intervention when home environments are harmful for the child, yet its impact on the child’s mental health remains complex. The research indicates that removal from the family can also contribute to negative mental health outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine how compulsory care affects children’s mental health, with particular focus on both positive and negative psychological outcomes. This is a literature study based on peer-reviewed scientific articles. The selected material was analysed using thematic analysis. The results indicate that compulsory care can improve children’s psychological health with adequate and stable support. However, it can also contribute trauma, emotional distress and have a negative affect on children’s attachment. The results highlights the importance of stability, continuity and safety to enhance children’s mental health during out-of-home placement. Compulsory care may function as both a protective intervention and a psychological burden for the child.
