Sammanfattning

The aim of this study was to understand social workers' descriptions about factors that affect and prevent young men from committing a delinquent act. The study was based on semi-structured interviews with six social workers from different organizations in Sweden that worked with young men involved in juvenile delinquency. We analyzed the descriptions with Travis Hirschi's social control theory and Albert Bandura's social learning theory. The result of our study was that social workers describe juvenile delinquency as a complex phenomenon involving several different factors that more or less interact with each other. The six social workers described risk factors to juvenile delinquency such as problems in the families - parenting and childhood trauma, problems in school - absence and low grades, belonging - involving in friendship that influences teenagers negatively and personality - teenagers impulse control, neuropsychiatric diagnoses and substance use. As preventive factors the social workers named protective parents, advantageous childhood and relations with adults, positive development in school and youths own resources and capacity as strengths.
