Considering ongoing climate change, the construction industry faces the challenge of developing new, sustainable building methods. One technique that has seen significant advancement in recent years is the use of CLT as the primary structural material. Despite notable progress, several uncertainties remain that must be addressed to enable broader implementation. One of the main challenges associated with timber buildings is fire safety, as wood is a combustible material. This thesis aims to investigate the feasibility of using cross-laminated timber (CLT) walls with exposed wood surfaces while still meeting the applicable fire safety requirements. The purpose of this study is to examine how the CLT walls can be designed to increase the possibilities for the interior wood surfaces on walls in buildings made of wood. The walls shall comply with fire safety regulations between fire compartments, where integrity (E) and isolation (I) shall be maintained, while maintaining a satisfactory design. Through a case study of a finished building project, it has been possible to compare proposals on the design. The results indicate that it is technically feasible to construct CLT walls with exposed interior surfaces that meet existing fire safety requirements. The study further demonstrates that technical substitutions (e.g., sprinklers) can be applied to meet requirements by adjusting the fire resistance classification. Through the case study of a suggested design of the apartment, it has been demonstrated that it is feasible to design a residential space with exposed wood as an interior surface and still meet the fire regulations.
