The purpose of the thesis was to investigate the choices of subject made by future social studies teachers in their degree projects at Karlstad University during the years 2010–2025, in order to contribute to the understanding of what is prioritized in the subject of social studies and to examine whether these choices can be linked to gender. To address this purpose, a quantitative content analysis was applied, where the degree projects were categorized based on 11 categories. The result showed a wide dispersion where all categories were represented, but where political science constituted the largest subject area. It also emerged that the number of theses and the subject focus varied over the years investigated. Furthermore, the result indicated that gender did have a major impact on the category of sociology, where women tended to write on this subject more than men. Apart from sociology, gender generally did not have a major impact on the choice of subject, but it was relatively even, although it could differ slightly.
