The cement factory in Stora Vika produced cement for Stockholm from 1949 to 1981, including for the million program. The factory was then closed in 1981. Today, the old cement factory in Stora Vika stands abandoned and decaying, and the town suffers the consequences of the dismantled industry. Community services, jobs, and meeting places in Stora Vika are disappearing. The purpose of my project is to revitalize the old industrial area and the community of Stora Vika. I will achieve this by creating jobs, gathering places, and promoting sustainable house construction (unlike the cement industry's significant environmental impact). My building will function as a community center with spaces intended for flexible use, popular education, and meeting places. There are many active associations in Stora Vika that desire better-suited spaces to gather in. In Vikahuset, there will be rooms where the community's associations can develop. Vikahuset will also host a branch of the Egnahem movement, which has recently seen a resurgence. Their activities, like this project, are based on communal building through workshops in practical construction, construction brigades, and research on future methods of sustainable house construction. Egnahemsfabriken is located on Tjörn, which, in relation to Gothenburg, is comparable to Stora Vika's relation to Stockholm (about 40 minutes by car). The building is located inside the large warehouse in the cement factory area, partially nestled in the 275-meter-long row of concrete pillars. The houses are built using rammed earth, where the soft earth material contrasts with the hard concrete structure while blending into the overgrown and rugged environment.
