Viljan att dela data i ljuset av kontextuell integritet : En kvantitativ studie om attityder till datadelning

This paper consists of a quantitative sociological examination focused on integrity in the digitalsphere. Specifically, its aim is to better the understanding of the attitudes towards sharing personal data among individuals in the population. The scope of the study consists of eleven European countries and the data is drawn from the dataset CRONOS-3, a part of European Social Survey. Theoretically the paper draws from Helen Nissenbaum’s theory of Contextual integrity which stipulates that integrity, and what it constitutes, is dependent on the specific context. The findings of the study tell us that the respondents showed a low general willingness to share data, meaning that the majority did not want to share data regardless of the specific context. Context did have an effect on the number of respondents willing to share data. More respondents were willing to share data with a public administration rather than a private company. When sharing data came with monetary compensation more people were willing to share. What type of data was to be shared also affected the willingness of the respondents. To explain the variance several regressions were made. The regressions included sociodemographic variables, digital know-how, trust and risk. The study showed that although the general willingness to share data is low there are significant differences given the specific context. This supports the Nissenbaum’s theory of contextual integrity as well as findings in the relevant literature. Individual factors do not seem to matter as much as the context.
