Sammanfattning

While nostalgia is a well-documented human experience in physical settings, the capacity for digital environments to serve as emotional anchors for a maturing population remains an underdeveloped area of research. This mixed-methods study investigated the psychological bond between individuals and the digital environments of their past, utilising real-world nostalgia as a benchmark for comparison. Using a modified version of Jesse Schell’s Elemental Tetrad (2008) as a taxonomical framework, the study aimed to isolate the specific design drivers (Aesthetics, Narrative, Mechanics and Dynamics, and Technology) that trigger the nostalgic experience. Quantitative survey data (N = 160) were paired with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of semi-structured interviews to capture the lived experience of nostalgic recall. The findings of this study suggest a fundamental structural parity between digital and physical nostalgia. The data indicate that participants do not distinguish between the two realms when establishing a sense of place. This equivalence is empirically supported by the results, which confirmed that the intensity of attachment to digital landscapes is statistically indistinguishable from that of real-world environments. Specifically, participants in the digital condition presented their memories with the same vividness and sensory specificity as those in the physical subgroup. Data from both the survey and interviews show that aesthetics are the strongest trigger for nostalgic experiences, followed by mechanics and dynamics. By demonstrating that virtual environments share a fundamental psychological architecture with physical ones, this study validates digital games not merely as entertainment, but as essential sites of environmental imprinting and lifelong place-making.
