Sammanfattning

The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the identity status of two cyborg characters in Adrian Tchaikovsky's Dogs of War (2017) are negotiated. Based on Marxist labor theory combined with a reading of Foucault's theory of power, three possible categories of identity status are defined: person, animal, and thing. I find that the political and coercive power that human characters have over the cyborg characters informs their treatment of the cyborgs, which in turn affects the negotiations of the Bioforms' identity status. The cyborgs negotiate their identity status mainly by exercising their agency, for example through covert acts of resistance while being treated as things, which in one case reverses a power relation.
