A2/AD in cyberspace : Russia's versus NATO:s approach to cyber deterrence

This thesis aims to return cyber deterrence to the field of military deterrence research by investigating whether the A2/AD paradigm may be applied to cyberspace. As a result of a comparative study of the cyber deterrence strategies of Russia and NATO this paper suggests that the difference in strategy may be explained as Russia using an Anti-Access approach while NATO:s strategy is best described as Area Denial. It further suggests that the reason for these different approaches stems from different perceptions of cyberspace itself.
