AI in the Municipal Workplace : A Case Study of AI Literacy and Work Environment in a Swedish Municipality

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the level of AI literacy among municipal office workers in a Swedish municipality and its association with quantitative demands, stress, job insecurity, and job satisfaction. Method: A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was used. Data were collected from 72 municipal employees, of whom 58 reported using AI at work and were included in the main analyses. AI literacy was measured using the Artificial Intelligence Literacy Scale, and psychosocial work environment factors were assessed using selected constructs from the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire. Pearson correlation analyses and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations between AI literacy and quantitative demands, stress, job insecurity, and job satisfaction. Result: The results showed no statistically significant associations between AI literacy and quantitative demands, stress, job insecurity, or job satisfaction, although weak correlations were observed. The strongest but non-significant association was found for stress (B = -5.30, p = .07). Conclusion: AI literacy alone may not be sufficient to explain variation in psychosocial work environment outcomes in municipal administrative work.
