Sammanfattning

The purpose of the essay is to contribute knowledge how linguistic variation is presented in textbooks för Swedish Level 1 in upper secondary school. The study focuses on how the content is structured and how attitudes towards linguistic variation and language use are expressed in textbooks. The study is relevant because linguistic variation is a complex subject consisting of several interconnected aspects. In addition, the design of textbook tasks is analyzed to investegate how they are constructed. The research questions are as follows: How is linguistic variation presented in the selected textbooks and what types of presentation are used in the texts? How are the assignments about linguistic variation designed and what abilites and knowledge are the students given the opportunity to develop? To analyze and categorize the textbook chapters, Niklas Ammert's (2011, p. 262) typology of presentation types was used as a theoretical framework. The analysis shows that the chapters are mainly the ascertaining type, where content is presented in a descriptive manner without deeper explanations. Furthermore, the results indicates that the most prominent type in the tasks is the reflective/analytical one, in which students are encuraged to reflect on and analyze language use and consider possible reasons for different linguistic reactions in different situations.
